Abuse: The misuse of power where the perpetrator gains control of the person so being abused. It may involve physical or psychological harm or causing the fear of that harm.

Acid Attacks: Acid attacks refer to a form of violent assault where acid or a corrosive substance is thrown by a person on the face or body of another person, with the intention to kill, disfigure, torture or disable such a person.

Attempted Rape: Attempted rape refers to any unwanted and uninvited sexual contact that stops short of rape. It includes sexual touching, fondling and sexual molestation.

Breast Ironing: Breast Ironing refers to the pounding and massaging, sometimes even burning, of a pre-pubescent girl's breasts using hard or heated objects in order to make them stop developing, or to make them disappear altogether.

Child Marriage: Child Marriage is a formal marriage or an informal union entered into between one or both individuals aged under eighteen (girls) and twenty-one (boys).

Child Sexual Abuse: Child Sexual Abuse is a form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation.

Coercion: Coercion refers to the act of forcing someone to do something, or threatening someone to do something against their will.

Confinement: Confinement refers to placing a person in captivity, or restraining them against their will. Confinement is wrong if it is done for no lawful or medical reason.

Consent: Consent refers to giving permission for something to happen or to agree to do something. Consent is lawful only if it is given by a person voluntarily, with all the relevant information and in his or her full consciousness. Consent obtained by fraud, misrepresentation, coercion, or falsehood is not consent.

Date Rape: Date rape refers to rape that occurs in a situation where there has been a romantic or a potentially sexual relationship between two parties. However, there is no consent to sex, and thus, amounts to rape when one partner forces oneself on the other.

Denial of Education: Denial of education refers to the act of refusing education, preventing one from accessing education or prohibiting access to education that is well within reach.

Discrimination: Discrimination refers to the treatment or the consideration of making a distinction in favour of one at the cost of the interests of the other.

Denial of Opportunities: Denial of opportunities refers to the act of refusing, preventing one from accessing or prohibiting access to opportunities that is well within the attainable reach and permissible access of a person.

Domestic Violence: Domestic Violence refers to violent or aggressive behaviour that takes place within the home, usually involving a spouse or an intimate partner, or any other relative who places himself in a dominant position.

Dowry Harassment: Dowry Harassment refers to a practice of harassing the bride and her family in order to demand durable goods, cash and property (movable and immovable) in the name of dowry, as a condition of the performance of a wedding, or the sustenance of the marriage.

Emotional Abuse: Emotional Abuse refers to abuse that is characterized by a person subjecting another, or exposing another to behaviour that may cause psychological trauma, anxiety, depression or even post-traumatic stress disorder.

Eve Teasing: Eve-teasing, a term commonly used in India, refers to the harassment of women that takes place in public places in the form of molestation, lewd comments, lewd singing and staring, among other things. More contextually, it is a localised term to denote street harassment of women.

Female Genital Mutilation: Female Genital Mutilation refers to the removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. A practice common to parts of Africa, the Middle East and India, Female Genital Mutilation is observed as a cultural ritual that aims to keep the sexuality and sexual drive of a woman "in check." 

Female Foeticide: Female foeticide is the act of killing a female foetus, outside the ambit of legal channels of abortion, only for the reason that the foetus is female.

Femininity: Femininity refers to a set of attributes, behaviors and roles generally associated with girls and women.

Forced Abortions: Forced abortions are abortions that are carried out without the consent of, or with the ignorance of, or with the consent obtained under coercion, of the pregnant woman.

Forced Marriage: Forced marriage refers to a marriage in which one or both of the parties is married without his or her consent or against his or her will.

Forced Sodomy / Anal Rape: Forced Sodomy or Anal Rape refers to forced anal intercourse.

Gender-based violence: Gender-based violence refers to violence that targets individuals or groups on the basis of their gender. 

Gender: Gender is a term used to denote the social characteristics that are assigned to men and women - and are a social construct, or rather, a social manifestation of one's gender identity.

Hegemonic Masculinity: Hegemonic Masculinity refers to practices that tend to promote the dominant social position of men, and the subordinate social position of women. The concept was popularized by R W Connell, a sociologist.

Homophobia: Homophobia refers to the hatred or the fear of homosexual people, and can manifest in the form of expressions of violence or hostility.

Honour Killings: Honour Killings refer to homocides of a member in the family or a social group by other family members, in order to "restore honour", pursuing a belief that such family member or social group has brought dishonour upon the family honour or the community honour. The death is considered to be a way to restore the honour of the family.

Hypermasculinity: Hypermasculinity is a psychological term for the exaggerated manifestation of stereotypical male behaviour, which includes such things as emphasis on physical strength, machisimo, aggression and sexuality.

Female Infanticide: Female Infanticide refers to the killing of a girl child on the ground that the preferred child is male and that a female child is a burden on the family.

Intimate Partner: An intimate partner refers to a person with whom one has a close personal relationship that includes emotional connection, regular contact, ongoing physical contact and sexual relations. It may or may not be a marital relationship.

Intimate Partner Violence: Intimate partner violence refers to physical, sexual or psychological harm by a current or a former intimate partner or spouse. It can happen in heterosexual or same-sex relations.

Marital Rape: Marital Rape, or spousal rape, or rape in marriage, is non-consensual sex where the perpetrator is the spouse of the victim. It is a form of domestic violence.

Masculinity: Masculinity is a set of attributes, behaviors and roles generally associated with boys and men.

Minor: A minor refers to a person aged under eighteen. In some jurisdictions, the age may be sixteen, as defined by laws specific to such regions.

Misogyny: Misogyny refers to the hatred or dislike of women or girls. Misogyny can manifest itself in the form of sexual discrimination, hostility, male supremacist ideologies, belittling women, objectifying women sexually, or even causing violence against women.

Molestation: Molestation refers to forcing undesirable and uninvited sexual behaviour by one upon another.

Neglect: Neglect refers to a form of abuse where the person responsible for providing care to the victim who is unable to care for himself or herself, fails or refuses to provide sufficient care.

Perpetrator: A perpetrator is a person who commits a crime, an illegal act, a form of abuse or inflicts violence.

Physical Assault: Physical Assault refers to an intentional act of causing another person to fear that they are about to be harmed physically. It is an act of placing a person in fear of imminent body harm.

Power: Power refers to the ability to influence or control the behaviour of people. In a situation of violence, power is often wielded as a negative element by the dominant individual over the subjugated individual.

Rape: Rape refers to a form of sexual assault where sexual intercourse or sexual penetration is perpetrated against a person without their explicit consent to such sexual intercourse or penetration.

Rape Culture: Rape culture refers to the social setting in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to social attitudes of gender and sexuality.

Sex: Sex refers to one’s biological status as a man or a woman.

Sex Slavery: Sex Slavery refers to the exploitation of women (and children) for forced sex work.

Sex Trafficking: Sex trafficking refers to the abduction, harbouring, sale and transfer of women and children for forced sex work.

Sexism: Sexism is a form of gender discrimination where a person is prejudiced based on their sex or gender.

Sexual Abuse: Sexual abuse is the use of sexual violence to misuse of power where the perpetrator gains control of the person so being abused. It involves sexual harm or causing the fear of sexual harm.

Sexual Assault: Sexual Assault refers to an intentional act of causing another person to fear that they are about to be harmed sexually. It is an act of placing a person in fear of imminent body harm.

Sexual Exploitation: Sexual exploitation refers to the exploitation of women (and children) for forced sex work.

Sexual Harassment: Sexual harassment refers to bullying or coercing of a sexual nature, by deploying unwelcome or inappropriate promises of rewards in exchange for sexual favours.

Stalking: Stalking refers to unwanted and obsessive attention by an individual or a group towards a person. It may or may not have sexual overtones, but causes harassment and intimidation.

Street Harassment: Street Harassment refers to the harassment of women that takes place in public places in the form of molestation, lewd comments, lewd singing and staring, among other things. More contextually, it is a localised term to denote street harassment of women.

Survivor: A survivor is a person who has faced and crossed an event that has caused harm, trauma or other damage that may be physical or psychological in terms of impact.

Workplace Sexual Harassment: Workplace Sexual harassment refers to bullying or coercing of a sexual nature, by deploying unwelcome or inappropriate promises of promotions, salary hikes or other rewards, in exchange for sexual favours. It may also involve non-quid pro quo sexual harassment, where no benefits are involved.
